There weren’t too many weekends that I wasn’t off playing sport or too many weekdays that I wasn’t at training. If I wasn’t playing sport, I was in my own backyard with a ball in hand or foot.
I still have very vivid memories of footy with my brother and taking off to score, only to run into a patch of catheads. There would be a quick stop to pull them out and then keep going to score that bragging right try.
We didn’t have the “nicest” lawn, but this is where all our time was spent. When you think about it nearly every sporting person’s journey begins in their own backyard.
Having my own kids now who have started playing sport you have that true realisation of the enormity that goes into the running of an organisation, a lot of unrecognised, unpaid hours.
Giving back to grassroots sport is a way of saying thank you to the people who work tirelessly so kids and adults can continue to experience and play sport.
Becoming a member, partner or sponsor as well as purchasing the Lawn Culture merchandise are all ways we can contribute to giving back to grassroots sport across Australia.
